If your schedule does not match that of our Guided Group Tours , or you simply prefer to go at your own pace, we offer Independent Birding Ventures (IBV) to explore Trinidad and Tobago. With an IBV, you pick the dates, the length of your stay, and the activity level. Independent travelers join other guests, typically not more than six persons in a group, for the outings scheduled during your stay at Asa Wright Nature Centre (AWNC) or at either of our lodges on Tobago. Outings are determined by the number of people staying at the lodge, the available guides and vehicles, and the weather. Each day may be with different guides for your outings, all of whom are local, experienced guides.
Each IBV includes a stay at the renowned Asa Wright Nature Centre on Trinidad — there is no better place to be immersed in birds and nature on the islands. Explore the trails with a naturalist guide, see manakins displaying on leks, and hear the Bearded Bellbird’s strange call. Bird from the famed verandah (where you could see 40 life birds before breakfast!). Hummingbirds and honeycreepers are at arm’s length, while toucans, trogons and more are just a scope-view away.
Each IBV offers the chance to visit the Centre’s Dunston Cave to view the breeding colony of Oilbirds, and, a highlight for all visitors is a boat ride deep into Caroni National Park, where your day ends with the spectacular flight of Scarlet Ibis returning to their mangrove roosts — truly one of the world’s most dramatic wildlife spectacles. At the AWNC, naturalists are on duty to provide walks, answer questions, and to help with identification from the verandah. We offer a Basic IBV with the above activities and a Birder’s Plus IBV that adds several off-site tours. For those with time we offer a 10-day Ultimate IBV with additional off-site tours and time on both lodges on Tobago.
Designed for two or more people, travel with that special someone, a family member, or a group of friends. IBVs are great for photographers and for couples or friends with varied interests.

All of our Trinidad and Tobago IBVs include: Accommodations (with private bath) for the nights specified, airport transfers on both islands, inter-island flights, all meals at lodges (you purchase lunch on your travel day between islands), complimentary early morning and afternoon coffee and tea, a complimentary rum punch at cocktail hour at the AWNC, guided tours as described, and entry fees for activities, boat rides, etc. as part of the itinerary.
A note for planning: Returning from Tobago, you cannot book fights out from Port of Spain earlier than 10:00 AM. Should you wish to take an earlier flight, you will need to add another night on Trinidad to your tour; you can spend much of the day on Tobago, return on an afternoon flight, and stay at one of two recommended hotels by the airport. These hotels have shuttles and are easy to book online (additional cost).
